Rhayader Dams: Go chasing waterfalls near Herefordshire

Forget Niagra, forget Krka - courtesy of the Rhayader Dams, you can see some jaw-dropping waterfalls just 20 mins outside Herefordshire. Here are some of the best shots from the Elan Valley that have dropped in to our social media news feeds this year.

If you\'re not familiar with the Elan Valley Reservoirs, they are a chain of five breathtakingly beautiful lakes nestled into the mid-Wales hills just 40 minutes west of Herefordshire.

They are particularly spectacular after heavy rain. And the wild weather this winter has made routes around the reservoirs hugely popular amongst the county\'s walkers, hikers and mountain bikers.

With more rain forecast for later this week, it might just be a perfect time to grab your wellies and check out scenes like these:

Life is like a waterfall, it is always moving and there is always an uneven flow to it.

The Elan Valley has a great website packed with information on the best walking routes - which range from just over half a mile to the seven-hour Resevoir Challenge - and where to refuel on coffee and cakes

Wondering where all that water goes? Birmingham, actually. Via a 73-mile aquaduct built 100-years ago that works solely by the power of gravity.

And this is what that sounds like (click on the center of the picture):
