Hereford's Magna Carta is coming home - and we've got free tickets

To mark the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, Hereford Cathedral's 1217 edition has been on an epic world tour – visiting seven countries, crossing 25 time zones and covering 65,000 miles.

Now the ancient document and international symbol for democracy is coming home. From December 18, Magna Carta and King John’s Letter will be back on display at Hereford Cathedral – and you can see it for free.

Later this month, the Hereford Magna Carta and King John’s Letter will go back on display in the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library Exhibition. It will be on show until the new year.

Hereford Cathedral and Herefordshire Live have teamed up to offer 25 people free entry to the opening of the exhibition at 10am on December 18.

To get your free entry, email hello@herefordshirelive.co.uk with your full name, address and the words Magna Carta’.

World tour

Over the past four months Hereford’s Magna Carta along with the unique King John’s Letter have visited seven countries, passing through New York, Shanghai and Lisbon along the way.

During the tour, organised by Hereford Cathedral, the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office, The GREAT Campaign and British Airways, the priceless documents have been on show at official residencies, museums and universities, giving people across America, Luxembourg, China, Hong King, Singapore, Malta and Portugal a chance to see them up close.

Hereford Cathedral canon Chris Pullin, who has accompanied the documents around the globe, said: “The tour has enabled more people than ever to learn about this iconic document, and to enjoy a rare glimpse of one of the most famous documents in history that has shaped our modern democracy – particularly during 2015, the 800th anniversary of its conception.”

Since September, Hereford’s Magna Carta has visited:

  • New York Historical Society, New York.
  • European Court of Justice, Luxembourg.
  • China: The British Ambassador's Residence, Beijing, The US Consulate Visa Hall Guangzhou and the British Consulate Shanghai.
  • Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery, Hong Kong.
  • Supreme Court of Singapore.
  • National Library, Valetta, Malta
  • National Archives, Lisbon, Portugal.
