We are a nation of cake-lovers. And whether it’s the Great British Bake Off or homemade mince pies that you love, a visit to Delilah’s of Ledbury is a trip to cake and cream tea heaven.

Mary Mahabir and Sue Richards bought the market town tearoom in October, and have already put their bespoke twist on this traditional tearoom.

“We like to do things that are a little different,” said Mary, who has been baking and coming up with her own creative cake own recipes for years.

“The scones fly – we can’t make enough of them. But we’ve also got the chocolate cake covered with gold leaf, and I make a cake using Westons cider which is something I invented.

“Our mince pies are made with local greengage as well as the traditional mincemeat. We like to adapt the recipes or create them ourselves, so you know that everything you get here is unique to Delilah’s of Ledbury.”

Their speciality is custom-made afternoon tea, finger sandwiches and cakes in miniature with delicate decoration ordered in advance and tailor-made for each customer.

“We’ve had lots of regulars coming back in saying how much they love the cakes, so we haven’t changed too much too soon but we’re putting our stamp on things,” said Mary.

“We’ve had a lot of new customers coming in and, I think, they’re pleased with what we’re doing.”

Sue and Mary met four years ago – brought together by vintage china.

“Sue was working as an accountant but she collected vintage china,” explained Mary.

“I was making cakes for events and I needed to borrow some vintage china for a wedding reception, so we found each other by chance really. We had a little agreement where I would borrow the china as and when I needed to. About 18 months ago, we started looking for a tea room, something we could work on together.”

The friends found a tearoom in Monmouth but couldn’t resist the lure of Herefordshire when they heard Delilah’s in Ledbury was up for sale.

“We went to have a look, we loved it and we put an offer in. It happened quite fast and 9am the next Tuesday we were there serving customers.”

Every day since, they’ve been selling their crowd-pleasing cream teas and homemade cakes to very happy customers.

In the run up to Christmas, Delilah’s of Ledbury will serve up a festive lunches and seasonal afternoon tea.

“We put a bit more alcohol in there - which is only right at this time of year,” explained Mary.
