'Hereford is full of cultured people... well, maybe four or five' - Jo Brand on the UK City of Culture bid

The much-loved, and massively loveable, stateswoman of the UK comedy circuit, Jo Brand has thrown her significant support behind little ol’ Hereford’s bid for UK City of Culture 2021. With a wink.

In the video clip – which you can check out below – she has fun with the bid, which is currently seen as the plucky underdog in a shortlist that also includes Cardiff, Coventry and Sunderland.

“I know the Herefordshire area very well,” she tells the camera. “It’s absolutely *checks notes* beautiful.

“And there are a lot of intelligent and cultured people living in Hereford and the surrounding area.  Well, maybe about four or five.”

In truth, Jo knows the county a little more than she lets on. An honorary patron of the Courtyard in Hereford, she has visited the city for the Borderlines Film Festival and performed fundraiser gigs at the venue.

And her refreshing, tongue-in-cheek assessment might be just what’s needed if the county is to take on its bigger-spending rivals and make a real run at the City of Culture award.

“I am personally looking forward to Herefordshire moving in to the 21st Century and really proving to the rest of country that they can be a valuable resource for culture, literature and bullocks.”

Check out the bid’s Facebook page here - like it, share it, throw all your cyber-support behind it because, if we are not the best at shouting about ourselves and all the wonderful cultural things going on in Herefordshire, then, does that not make it the most British bid of all?
