Black Friday deals in Herefordshire: What to get and where to get it

Your lefty mates will all tell you that Black Friday – the last Friday in November when chain stores slash prices in the run-up to Xmas – is a corporate conspiracy and a dirty American hand-me-down.

And they’re right, but it’s also a pretty good time to get a new TV. Or at least get in to a fist-fight over a new TV*.

Black Friday began as a ‘shopping holiday’, held the day after Thanksgiving in the States – a day when traditionally everyone is off work and still digesting the previous day's feast. But now it has evolved in to a rambling, week-long, and in some cases month-long, period of online offers.

When it came over here a few years ago – led primarily by Walmart-owned ASDA – it replicated the American model: slash a load of high-ticket items like TVs, but  only hold about ten of them in a store, encouraging crazed shoppers to queue up from the crack of dawn and charge around the store looking for these rare gems.

Now, the format is far more like the January Sales-stuff we are used to. Most major retailers simply apply a five to ten percent discount on all goods in store or online.

Here are some of the chains in Herefordshire going Black this Friday, and what they’re offering:

(*ASDA are no longer offering Black Friday deals after mania turned to violence in their stores in 2014.)

25-27 Maylord St, Hereford HR1 2DS

(In Homebase) Leadon Way, Ledbury HR8 2SR

Stores open at 8am – and hour early

Check out: Noise-cancelling headphones from Phillips for £34.99, or £60 off a Dyson Hoover

Holmer Rd, Hereford HR4 9SA

Ten percent off EVERYTHING.

Check out: One of those fancy pod-based coffee machines from Bosch Tassimo for £31.49.

Holmer Rd, Hereford HR4 9SH

Mill St, Leominster, HR6 8EF

Deals until December 1. So no rush. But if you want the Hereford store is open 7am - 8pm.

Check out: Another hoover deal – Vax’s bagless hoover is down from £72 to £55.

Bewell St, Hereford HR4 9AA

9 High St, Ledbury, HR8 1DS

5 Market Pl, Ross-on-Wye HR9 5NX

18 Corn Sq, Leominster HR6 8LR

Deals have been online for a few days, but Boots are releasing a load more today because they’re Old School like that.

Check out: Over 50% off Remington Shine Therapy hair straighteners,  Paco Rabanne’s perfume down to £32 from £54 just in time for the weekend.

Carphone Warehouse

Commercial St, Hereford HR1 2AJ

They’ve gone for their own branding – it’s a Black Tag event, apparently – but along with a load of deals you also get next-day delivery thrown in on online purchases. Stores open from 8am.

Check out: Worth digging down in to the number when you get in store, but they are claiming £200 off the upfront cost of the iPhone 6s – which looks like a helluva deal.

Curry’s PC World

Newton Rd, Hereford HR4 9LH

Another retailer to go for the Black Tag event, they’ve stocked up after shortages last year.

Check out: £200 off a killer Samsung Smart 4k Ultra HDR LED tele (£449), and a Hotpoint washing machine for £199 down from £329.99.

The Old Market, Hereford HR4 9HT

The High Street giant is cutting prices on a massive selection of stock – around 327,000 items – and offering extended opening hours from 8am – 10pm.

Check out: Imagine you’re at the airport with VAT-free prices on fragrances, or prep your kitchen for Xmas with 50 percent off cookware.

13 High Town, Hereford HR1 2AA

Deals vary store-to-store, but Game started cutting prices from 8pm last night to be first to the punch.

Check out: A third off Call of Duty Infinite Warfare (legacy edition) – which may well prove to be the tagline for Trump’s presidency.

Holmer Road, Hereford HR4 9SB

The bike and car guys are getting in on the action, and like Game posted up some deals last night – but you want to go in to store if you’re trying out a new set of wheels, no?

Check out: Disney ‘Frozen’ bike for £60 down from £100.

Holmer Road, Hereford HR4 9SB

Finally the discount arts and craft supplier tackles the prohibitive prices of glitter and glue holding so many back from getting in to home-made card-making. I jest. Stock up for Christmas card/decoration-making/wrapping here.

Check out: A Singer sewing machine – which my Grandma once told me are the Rolls Royce of sewing machines – for just £69.

12 Commercial St, Hereford HR1 2DB

Who doesn’t love a gadget? More than a 100 of them are discounted at Lakeland today.

Check out: Cheap Dry:Soon heated towel warmers (£27.49) and another discounted Dyson – this time the handheld cordless vacuum down from £249.99 to 149.99.

Marks & Spencer

30 High Town, Hereford HR1 2AB

A great British institution, Marks and Sparks is not sullying itself with Black Friday deals (although it is offering a Gifting Weekend promotion which basically seems like the same thing)

Check out: Discount Christmas decorations, dressing gowns and half-price pjs.

Station Aprroach, Hereford HR1 1DN

Barons Cross Rd, Leominster HR6 8RH

1 Station St, Ross-on-Wye HR9 7AG

Not your average BF store, Morrisons is also extending its offers to the pumps.

Check out: 10p of a litre of fuel, three litres of Jack Daniel for £50. Best taken advantage of in that order.

New Look

High St, Hereford HR4 9AA

Pretty straightforward: 50 percent off selected mens and womens clothing.

Check out: Winter coats and knits feature heavily in the ‘selected’ items.
