Get muddy: all the Tough Mudder-style events near Herefordshire in 2016

Falling somewhere between Ninja Warrior and a battle field, Tough Mudders, Mud Runners and all their dirty cousins have fast become some of the most popular fitness challenges in the UK.

For the uninitiated, these challenges typically involve a 5-10km cross-country run broken up by a series of obstacles designed to test your willpower, break your sunny disposition and generally get you and that new running kit as muddy as possible.

It’s like an army assault course on steroids.

The two new obstacles being introduced on the Mud Runner courses for 2016 are the fearsomely-named ‘Backstabber’ and ‘Block Ness’ which forces participants to negotiate a small lake by clambering over soft platforms that rotate like a rotisserie chicken.

If you think that sounds easy, The Survival of The Fittest event in Cardiff includes a rather bracing section in the International White Water Centre. Or if you want a more scenic location to take your mind off deep burn in your thighs, The Spartan Race in May takes place down the road from Prince Charles’ family home.

Seeing as you might want to spend some time preparing, both mentally and physically, for one of these challenges, we've pulled together a handy list of all the events within a couple of hours of Herefordshire for the upcoming year.

With many of events already booking up, and most organisers offering early bird discounts, January is a great time to put your money where your mouth is.

It is worth noting that many of the events also offer discounts for groups – and a little moral support may be well-advised for some of these courses – so tell your friends, and start rounding up your squad.

The good people at Tough Mudder were also kind enough to send us their own training programme for anyone who’s keen to take on the challenge – whether you’re a total beginner or an undercover Spartan.
