The Best Places to Eat in Ross-on-Wye

Consumer ratings website TripAdvisor should be handled with care. In 2012, the Advertising Standards Authority ruled it can no longer say it's reviews are from real travellers, or were honest. Or real. Or trustworthy.

But without TripAdvisor, we wouldn't have tripadvisaargh.tumblr.com - a collection of the weirdest, most wonderful and downright bizarre reviews, and my favourite thing on the internet after this.

So having declared that hypocritical standpoint, here are the best restaurants in and around Ross-on-Wye (according to TripAdvisor).

No 3 in Ross: Slow roasted pork belly, grilled lobster with tarragon butter, sweetcorn pancakes & red wine jus

A recent special at No 3 in Ross-on-Wye - slow roasted pork belly, grilled lobster with tarragon butter, sweetcorn pancakes.

Aside from the excellent cocktails, No 3 (which opened in summer 2015) is known for its modern European menu, offering light lunches, dinner and drinks. It's that sought-after "intimate and relaxed dining experience" where you won't feel stupid if you mispronuce jus.

2. The Moody Cow, Upton Bishop

Bar, British, Contemporary | ££ - £££

Saved from closure six years ago, this country pub is only a few minutes from junction 4 of the M50 but still at the heart of Upton Bishop village. There's a well stoked cellar, and an emphasis on home-cooked, locally sourced fare.

3. The Red Lion Inn, Peterstow

Bar, British, Pub | ££ - £££

Winters Cross, Peterstow, near Ross-on-Wye, HR9 6LH | 01989 730546 | redlionpeterstow.co.uk

With a chef-owner at the helm, you're in for good pub grub at the Red Lion. Kids eat free, Sunday roasts, plus there's a takeaway service if you've got somewhere else to be / just can't face cooking your own dinner.

4. Harewood End Inn, Harewood End

Into 28-day aged steaks and locally brewed beer? Well worth trying out the family-run Harewood End Inn then, a traditional country pub located five-ish miles from Ross.

5. Pots and Pieces, Ross-on-Wye

Cafe | ££ - £££

40 High Street, Ross-on-Wye, HR9 5HD | 01989 566123 | www.potsandpieces.com

Pots and Pieces, Ross on Wye

A cute little tea shop and art gallery on the high street. Head here if you're partial to loose leaf tea, homemade scones and clotted cream.

Italian, Vegetarian Friendly | ££ - £££

10 High Street, Ross-on-Wye, HR9 5HL | 01989 769222 | www.avellinorestaurant.co.uk

From the pizza to the Saltimbocca alla Romana, it's about traditional Italian fare at Avellino (which takes its name from the town in the Campania region of southern Italy, not too far from Naples). An independant, and popular, alternative to all those chain restaurants.

7. Yaks n Yetis Gurkha Restaurant, Ross-on-Wye

This little gem was opened 20+ years ago by ex-Gurkha soldiers and serves authentic Nepalese, Thai and Tibetan cuisine - curry, glass noodles, dumplings. Wash it down with the Gurkha beer, brewed in Nepal.

8. The Saracens Head Inn, Symonds Yat

Bar, British, Pub | ££ - £££

Symonds Yat East, near Ross-on-Wye, HR9 6JL | 01600 890435 | www.saracensheadinn.co.uk

Fantastic way of getting across the river to the pub, the barman comes out and fetches you on the boat

A post shared by Charlotte Briscoe (@charlotte_briscoe_interiors) on

Poised on the east bank of the River Wye, you can't go to Symonds Yat without stopping here. Preferably after a go in the hand-pulled ferry boat. As for the food, think Welsh black beef burger, queen scallops, Breconshire lamb, and Pilsner beer-battered haddock.

9. Wilton Court Restaurant, near Ross-on-Wye

British, European, Gluten Free Options | ££ - £££

Wilton Lane, Ross-on-Wye, HR9 6AQ | 01989 562569 | wiltoncourthotel.com

The 2 Rosette restaurant at Wilton Court serves contemporary British cuisine with a twist. And menu changes weekly, which we love.

10. Glewstone Court, near Ross-on-Wye

British, European | ££££

Glewstone, Ross-on-Wye, HR9 6AW | 01989 770367 | www.glewstonecourt.com

Glewstone Court's Braised Welsh Lamb Rump, Roasted Carrots, Hazelnut Pesto, Brown Butter & Tomato Jus

Glewstone Court's Braised Welsh Lamb Rump, Roasted Carrots, Hazelnut Pesto, Brown Butter & Tomato Jus.

The tasting menus draw plenty of people to Glewstone Court, a sumptous Grade II listed country house east of Ross. Extra special occasion? The regular wine evenings, hosed by owners Gary and Karen in the private dining room, combine fine dining with even finer wine.
