Weekend Essentials: cocktails and comedy.

New format this week, folks. Same top tips on how to spend your weekend.

Déjà Vu cocktail pop-up – Friday. 7pm. The Den, Hereford.

The celestial, Instagram-able majesty of these Autumn sunsets deserves a Happy Hour beverage to match. One guy that can do that, and some to spare, is Déjà Vu’s Conor Hart. Read up more on him here, and then get down to the Den this evening to try a cocktail that’ll blow the working week away.

It’s also International Meat Free Week. If you’re giving it a go, or even if you’re not, check out our list of best spots to eat out veggie in Hereford – and it’s good timing; this weekend sees the return of The Firefly’s hugely-popular Vegan Sunday Roast.

There’s also a free tour of Swan Brewery, one of the new faces on the Herefordshire beer scene, at their unit on the Brunel Road industrial estate in Leominster, and a pizza pop-up at the Nest in Ledbury, courtesy of Toad Mill. Serving slices up in the Orchard bar from 7.30pm on Saturday.

WHAT TO DO

Courtyard Comedy Club – Friday. 8.30pm. The Courtyard, Hereford.

Julian Deane tops the bill of this month’s curry and comedy night (the comedy’s better than the curry). This is what we said in our round-up of their (pretty damn good) Autumn comedy lineup:

"he was responsible for one of the best sets I’ve seen there, last time he was on Edgar St...he’s acerbic and world-weary in all the right places, and the crowdwork comes with killer punchlines. Go, but maybe don’t sit in the front row."

Also on the bill are Sean McLoughlin (previously supported both Ricky Gervais on his Humanity tour, and The Comedian You’d Most Want to Smoke A Cigar With, Bill Burr) and Yorkshire comedian Steff Todd who you’ll likely know from here impressions rinsing Love Island contestants and the Kardashians.

WHAT TO WATCH

National Lottery Cinema Day – Sunday. Various times. The Courtyard, Hereford.

Here’s the deal, buy a National Lottery ticket for a draw between Sept 26 – 29 and you can claim a free adult ticket for any of the Courtyard’s films on Sunday. Head to the CY’s page here for all the details, but the film sched has a load of bases covered. There’s Spike Lee’s latest joint Blackkklansman, football-fan-with-a-heart Colin Firth in the adaption of the classic Nick Hornby Fever Pitch,  sperm donor rom-com Anchor & Hope (more rom than com, and no relation to the Lugwardine pub), and modern-day frontier flick The Rider - which follows a rodeo rider’s fight to get back in the saddle after an accident, and had been a huge critical success.

If you prefer your horse-power with a little more chrome, Easy Rider, Dennis Hopper’s 18-certificate motorbike road trip that came to define the Great American Road Trip movie, gets a screening at the Market theatre in Ledbury on Friday night. It’s got hicks, Nicholson, and that acid scene.

Book Month at NT Berrington – Saturday – Sunday. 10am – 5pm. Berrington Hall, nr Leominster.

Because some early-autumn sunshine and a neo-classical mansion with books throughout its landscape grounds seems just too perfect and peaceful a way to spend your weekend. There are talks going on throughout Book Month – but get in touch with the National Trust property for details.
