Hereford gets the blues: new club launched

Hereford is set to sing the blues with the launch of a new club.

The Hereford Blues Club will be launched at The Booth Hall in Hereford on February 13, providing an opportunity for the county’s blues bands to shine alongside some of the country’s best.

John Hales, from Porkbelly Promotions, and Clare Foster, from Clear Cut Promotions, came up with the idea for the club at the end of last year.

“Clare and I have been working on several music projects and we are both avid blues Fans,” said John.

“We met with the owners of the newly opened Booth Hall, Arran and Willow Vidal-Hall and they were very excited about the idea, so it just left us with the task of getting Herefordshire’s King of Blues involved, Troy Redfern.

“Troy agreed to come on board and we are already booking into May.”

The Troy Redfern Band will kick off Hereford Blues Club on February 13 with support from Sweet Talk.

Troy is well established on the UK blues scene and last year toured the UK and Norway. He has also signed a record deal with the award winning Blues Boulevard Records.

His first album Backdoor HooDoo was a success not just in the UK but throughout Europe, where the band will be touring again later this year.

Troy is currently recording his second album but is determined to find time to support the local music scene.

Sweet Talk are a young blues band from Herefordshire. They consist of Owen Whittall (lead guitar and vocals), George Clark (bass guitar), and Owain Hanford (drums).

Owen and Owain are currently studying music at Hereford College of Arts and George is reading psychology, history and computing at Hereford Sixth Form College.

“It’s great to see young talent being given the chance to perform and gain experience in Herefordshire,” said Troy.

“We performed at the same gig late last year and I invited Owen to come up and perform a couple of songs with us.

“When I was starting out I was lucky enough to be invited on stage by more established musicians and I feel it is important that I give young musicians the same opportunity.”

The Hereford Blues Club will be held twice a month at The Booth Hall.

The Luke Doherty Band will be headlining on February 27 with support from Lucie Vowles and the Tetrachords.
