Gig Guide: Live music in Herefordshire this June

Summer summer summertime. Here's a round up of the best live gigs happening in and around Herefordshire this June. For the full works head to our What's On section.

Jazz with Pizazz @ Grange Court, Leominster

June 2 | Grange Court, Pinsley Road, Leominster, HR6 8NL | 7pm | £12.50

The Vintage Jazz Revival is coming. Ok it's a band, rather than a movement - La La Land was good, but not even a jazz purist played by Ryan Gosling is that good, but on Saturday, June 2 the revivalists will kickstart Leominster Festival 2017 by playing live in the gorgeous walled garden of Grange Court.

There'll be a bar, canapes and an indoor back-up plan if the rain falls.

Livewire Showcase @ Leominster Festival

June 3 | The Talbot, West Street, Leominster, HR6 8EP | 7pm | Free entry

Livewire is Herefordshire's musical educator, giving musicians aged 11 to 20-something real opportunites to hone their talent and perform live.

The charity - a wing of The Music Pool - is about opportunity, accessibility and talent, regardless of genre. Over the past few months, it's been holding workshop sessions - all leading to this live showcase.

Entry is free but you can prebook tickets here.

Nathan Ball @ The Ale House, Colwall

June 10 | The Ale House, Mill Lane, Colwall, WR13 6HJ | 7.30pm | £12.50

A firm favourite on the underground festival circuit, Nathan is all finger-picking acoustic tunes and poetic lyrics. He was a finalist in the MOJO magazine New Voice competition in 2011, released his debut in 2015 and recently toured with folk favourite Martha Tilson.

"Nathan Ball is an extraordinarily talented UK songwriter, singer, guitarist and luthier. His beautifully written songs reveal depths of humanity and a keen eye for metaphor, while his intricate, finger picking style makes every note from his guitar shine."

On June 10, he'll be live at the Ale House in Colwall - a community venue that's been hosting local events since Henry VIII wore the crown. Support will come from acoustic quartet Appleby Kinsey.

Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra @ Leominster Priory

June 11 | The Priory, Church Street, Leominster | 7.30pm | £15/£12

If we're heavy on Lemner this month it's only right. The town's annual festival runs every June and brings an impressive range of live music to the north Herefordshire town. As always, the festival ends with the big sound of the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) live in the Priory Church.

On the programme this summer is Wager (his dreamy Siegfried Idyll) and Bruckner.

Cliff Richard @ Eastnor Castle

June 17 | The Deer Park, Eastnor Castle, Eastnor, Ledbury, HR8 1RL | £45-£65

Look at him on that bike. Look! Sir Cliff will be live at Eastnor Castle deer park this month, for a "fully seated" outdoor show (probably doesn't mean dancing is banned...). It's a look back at his rock and roll golden years so expect renditions of Roll Over Beethoven, Great Balls of Fire, Sweet Little Sixteen and Cliff's own tracks from the late 50s.

The man's been in the charts for SIX DECADES.

Michael Ball and Alfie Boe @ Eastnor Castle

June 18 | Eastnor Castle, Eastnor, Ledbury HR8 1RL | 5pm | from £40

The day after Sir Cliff plays Eastnor, it's the turn of stage singers Michael Ball and Alfie Boe.

Ball is, obviously, a legend having made his West End debut as Marius in the original London production of Les Miserables, and going on to play Raoul in the Phantom of the Opera. More recently he won Olivier Awards for his turn as Edna Turnblad in Hairspray, and the title role in Sweeney Todd. Boe found fame after taking on the coveted role of Jean Valjean in Les Mes, and picked up a Tony award as a member of Baz Luhrmann's La Boheme revival.

An absolute bromance, as this video can attest.

The Goodwater @ The Globe at Hay

June 24 | The Globe at Hay, Newport Street, Hay-On-Wye, HR3 5BG | 8pm

"If you like old school 60's psych, bands like The Coral, you'll love this." So said Steve Lamacq of The Goodwater, who are playing Hay on June 24.

Providing a blast of rhythm and blues, backed with sharp drums and brazen riffs, this duo also offer up obscure lyrical narratives. Their unique psychedelic style of contemporary rock 'n' roll is an infectious collage of sounds.

ASCARIS, Conflicts UK, and The Seventh Circle @ The Booth Hall, Hereford

June 23 | Booth Hall, East Street, Hereford, HR1 2LW | 7.30pm | £3

The latest Hereford Heavy gig at the Booth brings Gloucester's blackened death metallers ASCARIS, filthy South Wales metalcore boys Conflicts UK, Anglo/Slovakian bruisers The Seventh Circle, and "Local Fantasy Djent Upstarts" ENMERKAR.

And as the 7th Circle put it, "you should probably come to this, smells like Mosh".

Tickets on the door. More info here.

El Dorado Festival 2017

From June 30 | The Deer Park, Eastnor Castle, Ledbury, HR8 1RL | weekend tickets from £120, day tickets from £45

el dorado 2016
