Who is Sammy Porter? Everything you need to know about the big name DJ coming to Play next weekend

It’s going to a busy summer on Blueschool Street, and kicking things off is Play’s biggest big-name DJ in years, Sammy Porter.

He’s in the booth on Friday May 4, headlining the latest Discotek bill. Here’s what you need to know about him before the beat drops:

1. He made this:

From pre-gaming to pool parties, it’s set to be one of the tunes of the summer – and What We Started was picked out as a ‘Future Anthem’ on Radio 1’s Dance Anthems.

For the second time, he teams up with Jessica Agombar on vocals, and more bounce than a pogo. Give it a spin.

2. He was signed by MistaJam

The Radio One DJ is known for having one of the best ears in the industry, and Porter was signed to his label Speakerbox Records. He’s since got radio play from both Jam and his R1 colleagues Danny Howard and DJ Target, as well as the likes of Kiss, Capital and 1xtra.

3. The kid’s got Juice

When he’s not rocking dancefloors Porter works as the label manager for legendary party brand LoveJuice. The London collective have taken over Ushuaia and Hard Rock Ibiza – and going back ten years, they basically created the sax-and-bongos, beach house sound that has since taken over the party scene in Marbella.

To mark ten years in the game, they launched LoveJuice Records and it was Porter who teamed up with George Mensah for the their debut release (embedded above). Which, I may add, it quite the banger.

4. He's pitch-perfect for Hereford

From Discotek: "We saw him as a suitable DJ with a suitable style of music for the people of Hereford. Not heavy, but light, soulful house music.

"From a guy who has had some well-known releases such as Renegade Master a few years ago, and more smooth, commercial deep house sounds such as remixes of tracks like Zedd, Maren Morris - The Middle. It's going to be a cracker for May's edition."

5. His Tinie Tempah remix has almost two million plays

Porter’s pretty prolific when it comes to remixes, and draws from across the board when it comes to DJs and artists. As well as Tinie Tempah, he’s put his stamp on mainstream hits from the likes of Ella Eyre, Jeremih and Flux Pavilion. The best of the lot might be his amped-up take on New Machine’s Chance:

To quote his bio: “His genre bending-style has allowed him to gain a following from various musical tastes.”

6. He loves his sunglasses.

Which is how you know he’s a superstar DJ. Porter’s gigs take him from tbe Med to the Middle East and you can follow his jet-setting lifestyle on Instagram here or on Snapchat @iamsammyporter.

7. He’s got a load of sets on Mixcloud to get you in the mood

Porter’s a regular guest mix for the likes of Rinse FM, and this month he posted a set from LoveJuice in Brixton. Cruise his Mixcloud page to get a flavour of what a Sammy Porter set sounds like, our fravourite is this soulful ‘& Friends’ one from Ushuaia.
