#EUChooseSafeFood, the campaign that helps you choose food with more information. Campaign emphasizes the role of science in ensuring food safety. The Spanish and European Food Safety agencies seek consumer confidence.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (Aesan) have launched the #EUChooseSafeFood campaign, which aims to generate confidence in consumers in Spain when choosing the food they eat, explaining simultaneously the role that science plays in the task of guaranteeing food safety.
In addition, the initiative seeks to explain certain aspects of food safety information to the public on topics such as label reading, food hygiene, health claims, allergens, additives, food-borne diseases or the role that bees play in our food.
Regarding labeling, the campaign teaches to distinguish between the expiration date and the date of consumption while, related to food hygiene, it provides basic rules to maintain food safety in our homes.
Allergens and additives
In the case of allergens and additives, the campaign explains the work of scientists from EFSA and national agencies to ensure that their use in food is safe and that the packages contain clear information on their inclusion while, on bees, explains their role within the food chain.
Foodborne illness and the role of science in preventing them is another important issue. Lastly, with regard to the health claim, the campaign emphasizes regulations that protect consumers from incorrect or misleading information about food.
Food technologists and experts in food safety such as Andrés García, Beatriz Robles, Miguel Ángel Lurueña, Gemma del Caño or Marian (“Apothecary”) García, will put their knowledge at the service of the #EUChooseSafeFood campaign, as will the experts from the EFSA and Aesan itself, and the main Spanish organizations working on food safety, nutrition or consumer rights.
